Description:

How can design act as a deterrent against suicidal behaviour on a bridge without the feeling of imprisonment?

Locations that put up barriers have said they feel they have let the majority of the community down by ruining the everyday experience of the spaces and the aesthetic can lead to negative impact. Through this three-day long workshop students will be introduced to ethnographic principles and co-design approaches that can later be incorporated into their studies. This theme is part of a wider active project within the centre. The workshop will also include a couple of site visits within London and guest speakers.

On the first day participants are asked to bring one object/visual, which represents them or their work

Timetable:

The project will take place over a three day period, which will include guest lecturers, practical exercises and feedback questions. It will conclude with a week long exhibition of the research projects. A provisional timetable is as follows:

Day 1: Discover (Battersea HHCD main office – Large Meeting Room AM / Out of office: PM)

10.00 – 10.40: Welcome and introduction to the workshop
(outline of the 3 days / house keeping and project outline)
10.40 – 11.00 Brief introduction from students and formation of groups

110.00 – 11.10 Coffee Break

11.10 – 11.30 Introduction to Helen Hamlyn Methodologies (Jonathan West)
11.30 – 12.00 Ethics, Reflection and suicidal behaviour (Lizzie Raby)

12.00 – 12.30 Cultural Case Studies (Ralf Alwani)

12.30 – 1.30 Lunch

1.30 – 3.00 Observation on Battersea/Albert Bridges

3.00 – 3.30: Travel to Archway bridge in Highbury

3.30 – 5.00: Archway bridge observations

Day 2: Define and Develop (Battersea HHCD main office – Large Meeting Room
10.00 – 10.30: Feedback from the observations
10.30 – 11.30: Brainstorming focus area and define brief

11.30 – 12.00: Workshop, Designing Out Crime (CSM)
12.30 – 1.30: Lunch

1.30 – 2.00: 4 minute presentation based on chosen brief and reasons for its choice
2.00 – 5.00: Concept development can be done at HHCD or in students own studios if they wish. RA and LR will be on hand if needed.
Day 3: Deliver (Battersea HHCD main office – Large Meeting Room and the gallery space)
10.00 – 11.00 Each group shares their direction and development work.
11.00 – 3.00 Groups work on a final visual for their chosen concept

3.00 – 4.00 Work to be displayed for exhibition
4.00 – 5.00 Presentations of work within exhibition space (5mins with Q&A)
5.00 – 6.00 Closing Remarks and exhibition opening (with drinks!)

There may be opportunities for future involvement in the project as it evolves.
