Challenges of Humanitarian Innovation

Duration: 4 days

This project challenges you to explore the positive capabilities of design to improve health
and wellbeing in an emergency humanitarian context.

Through an intensive week of rapid idea generation and prototyping, you will explore and develop concepts for a new product/service/system related to first line emergency provision or support activities.

Participants will work in teams, briefed and guided by guest speakers and expert advisors from related agencies, and by tutors from Global Innovation Design.

Guest speakers and project coaches are invited (to be confirmed) from Imperial College and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Humanitarian Innovation Fund, Oxfam, Spark Creative, Behaviour Architects, Real Relief.

Timetable:

Day 1
1030-1230 Project opening session
• Tutor introductions and team forming
• Project Briefing

1330-1600 Context & research
• Keynote: Key challenges in humanitarian design.
• Technology background and inspiration.

Day 2

  • Rapid Design Methods: user empathy; sketching interactions; rapid models for digital systems.
  • Facilitated team working: Rapid idea generation
  • Concept clustering and selection

Day 3

  • Concept refinement, studio tutorials
  • Rapid modelling, prototyping and visualising
  • Drop in sessions with studio team.

Day 4
0930-1300 Presentation preparation

1500-1630 Group Presentations,
• Presentation of final concepts to an audience including guest speakers and contributing
tutors.
• Closing remarks from tutors and visitors.
