Cell S3D Visualization

Stereoscopic 3D Visualization (S3D) enables spatial rendering of 3D objects. This can be done by using different software packages, also the Open Source software Blender provides this functionality. By using 3D-viewing devices, such as 3D Headsets, Smartphones with Google Cardboard, 3D TVs, professional 3D screens, or simple 3D anaglyph glasses, 3D videos can be experienced in full 3D.

The CELLmicrocosmos 5 project created a number of S3D visualization of biological cells with the help of a number of talented students. The major output of this project is the 3d animation “Chlamydomonas 3D – From Biological Cells to Biofuels”. This video won the Best-of-Show in Animation/CG at the Stereoscopic Displays and Applications Conference in 2016:

The video shows how the green algae cell Chlamydomonas rheinhardtii can be used to create fuel. It discusses the underlying processes by making use of stereoscopic 3D visualization. The complete video was modeled and rendered with the free Open Source software Blender. Video editing was done in Blender and/or Lightworks. A 3D version of this video exists compatible to a number of 3D-viewing devices (3D TVs, 3D Headsets, Smartphone with Google Cardboard, etc.).
