Theme: Caring Society
Caring Society
The Caring Society theme investigates the practical and philosophical dimensions of health and well-being, and how we can shape society to be more effective in the processes of care. We consider the contributions creative practices can make to interdisciplinary projects that support, develop or promote a more caring society.
Both the concepts of ‘care’ and ‘society’ are complex and invite questions such as what role care plays across different societies, and how societal changes in the future might affect the meaning of the phrase ‘caring society’. This theme prompts careful ethical reflection on the actions and intentions behind creative practices. How do you promote, develop or support the care needs of others without making assumptions about these needs?
Teams working with this theme have investigated the potential for creative practitioners to respond, engage, mobilise and deepen awareness of the needs of a more Caring Society. In the process, subthemes and topics have emerged, revealing contemporary concerns and complexities around health and wellbeing, neurodiversity, mental health, inclusive design, the social model of disability, healthcare, medicalisation, pandemics, death, and ageing society.
